How to Spot a Phishing Scam and What to Do If You’ve Been Targeted

Phishing scams are deceptive attempts by fraudsters to obtain your sensitive information by posing as trustworthy entities. These scams often come through unsolicited emails or text messages that appear to be from reputable organizations, such as Amazon or Walmart, requesting you to verify personal details like your Social Security number, credit card information, or passwords. Once obtained, scammers can use this information to access your accounts, make unauthorized charges, or even apply for new loans in your name.  

  • Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Requests: Legitimate organizations will not ask for sensitive information through insecure channels. If you receive an unexpected message requesting personal details, do not respond or click on any links. 
  • Verify the Source: Instead of using contact information provided in the suspicious message, independently verify the organization’s contact details through their official website or other trusted sources. 
  • Look for Red Flags: Phishing messages often contain generic greetings, grammatical errors, or urgent requests to act immediately. These are indicators that the message may not be legitimate. 
  • Use Security Software: Ensure your devices have up-to-date security software to help detect and block potential threats. 
  1. Stop and Assess the Situation: Identify what information or accounts may have been compromised (e.g., checking account, email, passwords). 
  1. Secure Your Accounts: Change compromised passwords immediately, starting with your email, and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for added security. Notify your bank or credit union if financial details were shared and monitor accounts for unauthorized activity. 
  1. Scan for Malware: Run a full scan on your devices using up-to-date antivirus software to ensure no malware was installed as part of the phishing scam. 
  1. Report The Scam: If financial details were compromised, report the incident to your bank or credit union immediately. They can help secure your accounts, monitor for unauthorized transactions, and guide you on additional steps to protect your finances. 
  1. Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly check financial statements, credit card activity, and credit reports for any signs of unauthorized activity.  
  1. Freeze or Place Alerts on Cards: You can do this on cPort’s Debit Card Control App.   

By staying vigilant and following these precautions, you can protect yourself from phishing scams and minimize potential harm if you become a target.
